I Am Still Alive

In 1969, On Kawara sent a telegram that read "I AM NOT GOING TO COMMIT SUICIDE DON’T WORRY", followed by "I AM NOT GOING TO COMMIT SUICIDE WORRY" and " I AM GOING TO SLEEP FORGET IT".
These were followed, a month or so later, with another that read "I AM STILL ALIVE." Almost nine-hundred more identical telegrams would follow, addressed to dozens of friends and acquaintances, for more than three decades. By this time Kawara had stopped writing about or explaining his work. In response to inquiries from journalists or curators, he would typically send a telegram reading "I AM STILL ALIVE".
This first edition by Edition René Block (another would follow in 1978) contains reproductions of the telegrams. It is available here, from Harper's Books, for $1750.00 US.

The first survey of writings by Andrew Paterson includes a series of new and recent poems as well as four scripts from his videos The Walking Philosopher (2001), Eating Regular (2004), 12 x 26 (2008) and Passing (2013). The title is rounded out with four of his 'fictocriticism' texts which had originally been published in IMPULSE magazine throughout the 1980's.

(1971); The Discovery of the Sardines (1971); and The Symmetry of Diplomacy (1971).

"The original copy of Musical Book I produced and used in the production of Il Té di Alice (Alice's Tea-time), was performed by Lo Zoo throught Europe in 1969. The present edition is a collaboration with Michael Goodman on the Nexus Press. The first performance from this edition occurs on the 20th of March, 1979."

A poem consisting of only four words, broken into different syllables. Three of the four are the first words from the Joint Army/Navy Phonetic Alphabet designed for radio transmission during World War II (A for Able, B for Baker and C for Charlie). This alphabet uses D for Dog, which Lax has replaced with Dance.
The book features drawings and design by Emil Antonucci - best known for his 'soft-modernist' logo for The Four Seasons - whose collaboration with Lax lasted over twenty-five years.

Mexican conceptual artist Felipe Ehrenberg died yesterday of a heart attack at the age of seventy-three. Ehrenberg co-founded the Beau Geste Press with his wife Martha Hellion and artist David Mayor. In addition to numerous artists' books and catalogues, they published the artists' periodical Schmuck, which was the subject of a series of posts here, last week and the week before (see hashtag below).
The press ceased operation and Ehrenberg returned to Mexico in the mid-seventies, moving to Xico, a small town in the state of Veracruz. He began creating sociopolitical art and joined the los grupos movement. He worked as a professor at the Universidad Veracruzana, and received Fulbright and Guggenheim scholarships. From 2001 to 2006, he served as the cultural attaché to Brazil.
A retrospective dedicated to the press's output continues at the CAPC in Bordeaux, France, until the 28th of this month.
